               วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ ผู้วิจัยมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของจิตตคหบดีอุบาสก ที่ปรากฏอยู่ในคัมภีร์พุทธศาสนา ศึกษาชีวประวัติความเป็นมาทั้งในอดีตชาติและปัจจุบันชาติ ที่ทำให้จิตตคหบดีเป็นผู้มีคุณธรรมและปัญญาอันยอดยิ่ง สามารถบรรลุธรรมเป็นอริยบุคคลขั้นอนาคามี แม้ว่าจิตตคหบดีมีอาชีพเป็นพ่อค้าดำเนินชีวิตเป็นฆราวาส แต่มีความสามารถในการนำหลักธรรมออกเผยแผ่ ทำให้พุทธศาสนิกชนเลื่อมใสศรัทธา และเป็นที่ยำเกรงของเหล่าอัญเดียรถีร์ จิตตคหบดีเปรียบเหมือนเสาหลักของพระพุทธศาสนา วิธีการของการแสดงธรรมอันยอดยิ่ง ทำให้ท่านได้รับการแต่งตั้งจากพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ให้เป็นเลิศในด้านธรรมกถึก

               ผลการวิจัยพบว่า

               ในอดีตชาติจิตตคหบดีได้ฟังธรรมของพระพุทธเจ้าปทุมุตตร และได้ตั้งความปรารถนาเพื่อความเป็นธรรมกถึก ในปัจจุบันชาติจิตตคหบดีได้ฟังธรรมของพระมหานามเถระได้สำเร็จเป็นพระโสดาบัน อันเป็นมูลเหตุให้ถวายสวนมะกอก เพื่อสร้างวัดอัมพาฏกาวันไว้สำหรับต้อนรับพระภิกษุจากทั่วทุกสารทิศ เมื่อจิตตคหบดีได้ฟังธรรมของพระสารีบุตรเถระก็ได้สำเร็จเป็นพระอนาคามี คุณธรรมที่โดดเด่นของจิตตคหบดีมี 4 ประการได้แก่

                   1. ทาน เป็นผู้ให้ทั้งอามิสทานและธรรมทาน
                   2. ศีล เป็นผู้มีความประพฤติดีงาม
                   3. สมาธิ เป็นผู้มีจิตใจหนักแน่นมั่นคง
                   4. ปัญญา เป็นผู้มีวิจารณญาณ

               จิตตคหบดีอุบาสกได้รับยกย่องว่าเป็นผู้เลิศในการแสดงธรรม (ธรรมกถึก) มีส่วนสำคัญในการเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนา แสดงธรรมแก่พุทธบริษัทมิตรสหายตลอดถึงนักบวชในลัทธิอื่น (อัญเดียรถีย์) จิตตคหบดีอุบาสกเป็นแบบอย่างของชาวพุทธผู้ประพฤติดีงาม ปกป้องอุปถัมภ์บำรุงพระพุทธศาสนา และเผยแผ่คำสอนจิตตคหบดีได้ประพฤติปฏิบัติตนเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีในสังคม คุณความดีของท่านพระพุทธองค์ได้ทรงยกย่องว่า “อุบาสกผู้มีศรัทธาเมื่อปรารถนาโดยชอบพึงปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า ขอเราจงเป็นเช่นจิตตคหบดีและหัตถกอุบาสก ชาวเมืองอาฬวีนี้เป็นตราชู เป็นประมาณแห่งอุบาสกทั้งหลายผู้เป็นสาวกของเรา”

               ดังนั้น อุบาสกและอุบาสิกาไม่ว่าในปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต ควรศึกษาบทบาทแล้วนำเอาคุณธรรมของจิตตคหบดีมาประยุกต์ใช้ให้เกิดประโยชน์ทั้งต่อตนเอง ครอบครัวและสังคม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งพึงศึกษาหลักธรรมคำสอนแล้วน้อมมาช่วยเผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนาให้รุ่งเรืองสืบต่อไป

บทคัดย่อภาษาอังกฤษ

            This thesis is aiming at studying Citagahabodee Upāsaka’s roles appearing in the Buddhist Scriptures and his detailed biography both in the past and in the present which enables him to be possessed of the best virtues and wisdom and to attain the Dhamma causing him to be an Anāgāmi. Though he was a merchant leading the household life, he was able to spread the principles of Dhamma and cause the Buddhists to have faith in Buddhism. At the same time, he could make the elegies of other religions to respect the Buddhists. He was praised by the Buddha to be the one who has the preacher’s best qualities because of his method of teaching the Dhamma.

            From the research, it is found that

            In his past birth, he listened to the Dhamma from Padumuttara Buddha and could set his mind to be the Dhamma preacher. In his present life, he first listened to the Dhamma from Māhanāma Thera and later attained Sodapannaship. He then caused Ambātakavan Temple to be built in Makog Garden for monks coming from all directions. Later on, he attained Anāgāmīship after his listening to the Dhamma from Phra Sārīputta Thera.

            The outstanding Principles of Dhamma followed by him as follows:-

                 1. Dāna (generosity of both material gift and doctrinal gift.)

                 2. Sila (moral behavior)

                 3. Samāthi (Mental concentration)

                 4. Paññā (Wisdom)

            Citagahabodee was praised to have best qualities in preaching the Dhamma outstanding co-operation to spread Buddhism and preaching the Dhamma to Buddhist friends as well as to the clergies of their religions. He was a good example of the Buddhists in moral behavior, the protector and the supporter of Buddhism in such a way that the Buddha praised him as follows:-

           “Upāsaka who has faith must make the same wishes as those made by Cittakhabodee and Hattaka Upāsaka in Aāravee Town. This is the scales for all Upāsakas. My own disciples.”

            Therefore, the Upāsakas and the Upāsikās of both at present time and in future time should know about the roles played by Cittagahabodee and apply them to their lives in order to make them beneficial to each and every person, family and society; especially to the spreading of Buddhism.
