ดุษฎีนิพนธ์เรื่อง  “พุทธภูมิปัญญาไทยเชิงพุทธที่ปรากฏในพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช  รัชกาลที่ 9 ”   เป็นวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ  มีวัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัย 3 ข้อ ดังนี้  1. เพื่อศึกษาประวัติความเป็นมาและศิลปวัฒนธรรมในพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพของพระมหากษัตริย์ 2. เพื่อศึกษาคติความเชื่อพราหมณ์-พุทธที่ปรากฏในงานศพพระบรมศพของพระมหากษัตริย์  3. เพื่อศึกษาภูมิปัญญาไทยเชิงพุทธ  ที่ปรากฏในพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพ    ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช  รัชกาลที่ 9                                    

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า  ภูมิปัญญาไทยเชิงพุทธที่ปรากฏในพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช  รัชกาลที่ 9   พระเมรุมาศออกแบบโดยยึดถือคติตามโบราณราชประเพณีรูปแบบเฉพาะ   สำหรับพระมหากษัตริย์ มีรูปแบบเป็นพระเมรุมาศทรงบุษบก ประกอบด้วยชั้นเชิงกลอน 7 ชั้น ภายในตั้งพระจิตกาธานสำหรับประดิษฐานพระโกศจันทน์ ผังพื้นสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส มีบันไดทางขึ้นทั้งสี่ด้าน ยกพื้นสูงเป็นฐาน 3 ชั้น  ชั้นบนสุดมีมุมทั้งสี่มีซ่าง (ส้าง/สร้าง  หรือสำช่าง) ทรงบุษบกยอดมณฑปชั้นเชิงกลอน 5 ชั้น เป็นที่สำหรับพระพิธีธรรม 4 สำรับ สวดพระอภิธรรมสลับกันไป ตั้งแต่เมื่อพระบรมศพประดิษฐานบนพระจิตกาธานจนกระทั่งถวายพระเพลิงแล้วเสร็จ  ที่มุมฐานชั้นที่ 2  ประกอบด้วยซุ้มทรงบุษบกรูปแบบเดียวกัน รวมได้ 9 ยอด 

ทำให้ทราบว่าคติความเชื่อเรื่องพระมหากษัตริย์ในสถานะเหมือนสมมติเทพ  ในระบอบเทวนิยม   รวมถึงแนวคิดคติจักรวาลวิทยา หรือคติไตรภูมิตามคัมภีร์พุทธศาสนา ซึ่งบอกลักษณะสัณฐานของจักรวาล การมีอยู่ของนรก โลก สวรรค์ ว่าด้วยรูปแบบของจักรวาลนั้นมีฐานกลม โดยมีแกนกลางคือ เขาพระสุเมรุ ซึ่งล้อมไปด้วยเขาสัตบริภัณฑ์ มหานทีสีทันดร และทวีปทั้ง 4  ซึ่งเป็นที่อยู่ของมนุษย์ สวรรค์ ณ เขาพระสุเมรุที่ประทับเดิมอันเป็นศูนย์กลางของจักรวาล จึงเกิดเป็นโบราณราชพระเพณีในการเฉลิมพระเกียรติแก่พระบรมศพอย่างองค์อวตาร  จัดสร้างสถานที่ถวายพระเพลิงอย่างสวรรค์  ตกแต่งเป็นสีทองเรียก “พระเมรุมาศ”อันหมายถึงเขาพระสุเมรุ ซึ่งช่างได้จำลองสัญลักษณ์ของจักรวาลทั้งในงานผัง งานสถาปัตยกรรม และองค์ประกอบทั้งหมดในมณฑลพิธี ตามคติในศาสนาพราหมณ์และพระพุทธศาสนา  คือภูเขาที่เป็นหลักของโลก ตั้งอยู่จุดศูนย์กลางของโลก หรือจักรวาล เป็นที่อยู่ของสิ่งวิญญาณ ในภพและภูมิต่างๆ นับแต่สัตว์นรก สัตว์เดรัจฉาน ไปถึง มนุษย์นาค ครุฑ ยักษ์มาร คนธรรพ์ ฤๅษี และเทวดา โดย มีปลาอานนท์หนุนอยู่ รอบเขาพระสุเมรุ

ผลวิเคราะห์พบว่าภูมิปัญญาไทยเชิงพุทธที่ปรากฏในพระราชพิธีพระบรมศพของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช รัชกาลที่ 9  คือ พระเมรุมาศเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ ไม่ประมาทมีสติในการใช้ชีวิต ภพภูมิแห่งความดีงามในทางพระพุทธศาสนา ตามคติไตรภูมิ หรือ ภูมิจักรวาล มี นรก มนุษย์ สวรรค์ หรือ พ้นไป คือ นิพพาน เป็นต้น เป็นการแสดงภพภูมิให้มนุษย์เร่งกระทำกรรมดี  หรือปฏิบัติวิปัสสนาเพื่อให้เกิดปัญญาในการพ้นไปจากภูมิทั้งสาม  ไม่เวียนว่ายตายเกิด อีกนั้น  คือ  นิพพานการมั่นเจริญภาวนาเพื่อความพ้นไปจากวัฏฏะสงสารไม่กลับมาเกิดอีก  คือ  นิพพานตามหลักการของพระพุทธศาสนา คติไตรภูมิพระร่วงที่มีพระเมรุมาศเป็นสัญลักษณ์สื่อถึงภพภูมินั้นเอง การกระทำส่งผลต่อภพภูมิหน้าของมนุษย์หลังจากสิ้นชีวิตลง การกระทำจะส่งผลต่อไปภพภูมิหน้า  การกระทำกรรมดี  และการปฏิบัติธรรมสามารถนำพาไปสู่ภพภูมิที่ดี  เช่น  สวรรค์ชั้นต่างๆ ตามกรรมนั้นๆ กรรมดีจะพาไปในภพภูมิที่ดีหรือสูงยิ่งๆขึ้นจนหลุดพ้น คือ นิพพาน หรือการ  มีสติในการใช้ชีวิต เป็นมนุษย์ที่สมบูรณ์อันประกอบด้วยปัญญา เป็นการไม่ประมาทเป็นหนทางแห่งความไม่ตาย คือ การเห็นถึงความไม่เที่ยงของสังขารมีทุกขัง อนิจจัง อนัตตา เร่งกระทำแต่กรรมดี
